Two Important Issues…PHISHING and the Lead Law

by Kym on February 14, 2009

I got an email yesterday that was from Pay Pal. It had the logo, my name, the right typeface everything. It said my account had been compromised. I opened another window and logged on to Pay Pal through that. I found nothing that said my account had been compromised.
I went back to the email and opened a link from the email…the home page looked exactly like Pay Pal’s. The only difference was that the web address (url) had some extra letters/numbers in it. I went back to Pay Pal in my own window and called them and verified my account with them. I then forwarded the email to them and followed their directions for deleting and trashing the email!
Later that evening I got another email from Pay pal security department. They said that the suspicious email was a phishing attempt and that since I emailed it to them they can work at catching the phisher!
Since many of us use paypal so much, I just wanted to let you all know and remind you to open a new window and log on to Pay Pal that way….never through an email!
On to news about the “Lead Law”….here is a link to Etsy with an excellent article that explains the “Now what” of the law and what we can do to help. (That is the first link I have been able to do in a post!!)
Have a happy Valentines Day!!!

I had a similar e-mail from ebay about 4 or 5 years ago. I clicked on the e-mail, stupid me, I work on computers so much of the time in the media center, I just wasn’t thinking. I ended up having to change all my account info. What a hassle!
